Styrofoam Packaging Causing Environmental Concerns
2019-09-11
From:PTS TAIWAN

Most of the broccoli you see at the market are imported from either Vietnam, Indonesia or the United States. However, the ones imported from Southeast Asia specifically, are usually packed in styrofoam boxes to keep the produce fresh during transportation. The Xiluo Agricultural Market accumulates roughly 1000 of these boxes weekly which poses a major environmental threat.

These fresh broccoli are imported from Vietnam and have been stored in styrofam boxes to ensure they stay fresh during transportation and storage. However, the styrofoam containers are gradually turning into a major environmental concern.

The quality of the cardboard boxes from the place of origin is not good. Therefore, they choose to use styrofoam boxes instead. Maybe it’s because their cardboard boxes are not as durable or not strong enough.

The Xiluo Agricultural Market regularly imports produce packaged in styrofoam boxes, such as broccoli and baby corn. However, styrofoam boxes are rather brittle and cannot be recycled. The workers at the market gather around 1,000 of these boxes every week, which is a major environmental threat.

I hope the government can ban the use of styrofoam boxes from the source of origin. The cardboard boxes can be recycled but styrofoam can’t.

Styrofoam boxes bring a lot of environmental concern. It cannot be reused, whereas plastic containers are stronger and more durable, they won’t break after just one use and therefore can be reused multiple times.

Environmental Protection Bureau of Yunlin County said that workers at the market will amass the styrofoam boxes and bring them to the cleaning staff, who will contact other factories for recycling. However, workers at the market said they hope the government can put in place laws that stipulate the use of cardboard boxes for produce packaging. The workers said they want to prevent the large number of styrofoam boxes from turning into an environmental disaster.
